Blue Thumb -- Planting for Clean Water
Blue Thumb -- Planting for Clean Water offers resources for homeowners who want to plant native plants, raingardens, or shorelines plants as a way to protect water quality. Since nowadays much of our landscape is covered by hard surfaces - streets, parking lots and roofs - water cannot soak into the ground. Instead it flows over these hard surfaces and into our lakes and rivers picking up pollution along the way. Planting for Clean Water with native plants allows water back into the ground and stops polluted stormwater runoff from entering lakes and rivers. Plantings also provide natural habitat, nectar, pollen, and seeds for bees, butterflies, birds and other wildlife.
