Creating Compost with “Puppy Presents”

U.S. residents own an estimated 74.8 million dogs.  74.8 million dogs, as you can speculate, leave a whole lot of “surprises” on this earth in their lifetime.  So the problem lies with what to do with all that puppy waste?

Traditionally, we have “mummified” dog waste in it in plastic bags and thrown it in landfills.  However, many outstanding organizations, companies, and individuals are now looking to keep landfill use to a minimum, choosing to put what they can back into the earth– including “puppy presents”– by using such products as BioBag compostable dog waste bags.

BioBag USA is the world’s largest brand of certified compostable bags and films made from the material, Mater-Bi. All of our products contain GMO free starch, compostable polymer and other renewable resources.

EnviroWagg, LLC is composting dog waste into DOGGONE GOOD COMPOST®, a safe and nutrient-rich soil amendment that greens up gardens. Professional composting upcycles dog waste into a useful product while diverting this nuisance material from walkways and landscape, landfills and streams.

Cayuga Compost was formed in 2005, when Jim and Mary Proctor took over the composting operation from the Cayuga Nature Center. At that time, there were 7 businesses composting; today there are over 100 businesses using our composting service. 3,394 tons of compost waste was diverted from the landfill in 2009.

Guys, this doesn’t do much good if we can’t do it here. (TC area or in our local neighborhood or 4 block radius). Furthermore, you need to always acknowledge that local garbage goes to HERC to be combusted. WE DON’T LANDFILL much in Hennepin Co. Now, if you were talking about somebody who built doggy dooly setups in their back yard…
    whole nother story.

Just cause the bags and the waste are theoretically compostable doesn’t mean that it is such a great idea. You might want to read the following concerns about the practics.

From what I’ve read methane digesters are the more optimal way to dispose of this kind of waste, but not many are easily accessible for the general public.

True pet wast composting facilities might not be available in the area as of now, but it is always a great idea to inform and educate ourselves of options that might be possible for the future.
I have read that many communities are banning together and starting this type of composting at their local pet parks as well as independent businesses popping up to offer these services. Interesting enough, Zoos compost their animal manure as well.

If other areas of the country can do it, so can we.
